Sevenoaks Osteopath Treating Hip Pain

Should I see an Osteopath or a Physio for my hip pain?

This is a commonly asked question and at Apollo Clinics we offer a multi-disciplinary approach. Osteopathy aims to restore a balance within your body, focusing on ensuring your skeleton, muscles, tissues and all parts of your body are working in harmony together. In general an Osteopath tends to work more with their hands but will still prescribe you with exercises to complete independently.

Physiotherapy focuses on the rehabilitation of your physical function primarily through the use of exercise and modalities. That said, a Physio will also as well as manual therapy techniques such as massage.

Both Osteopaths and Physios are well equipped to treat hip pain and will examine, diagnose and treat problems with your joints, bones, soft tissue, muscles and nerves by looking at the function of your body. We will always guide you to the most appropriate treatment which may include a combination of both.

What to expect from the first appointment?

Whether you are seen by the Osteopath or the Physiotherapist, both first appointments will follow a similar process and you will be sent a patient intake form via email beforehand to help provide as much context as possible.

  • Case History: Your practitioner will ask you a variety of questions about your complaint. They will ask you about your current problem as well as any history for the presenting issue. They will also go through your medical history to determine if the cause of your pain may not be musculoskeletal.
  • Assessment: Once the practitioner has all the required information, they will perform a direct and focused assessment to diagnose your current issue. This will include observation of your standing/seated posture and range of movement, palpation which is the process of gently applying pressure around muscles and joints, orthopaedic tests and special tests where required such as blood pressure or respiratory examinations.
  • Treatment: Your treatment will depend upon your individual assessment however may include soft and deep tissue massage techniques, stretching and METs, taping, and spinal or joint manipulations

Hip pain Treatment Q&A

If you can’t see your question answered below, please don’t hesitate to give us a call directly

The most common cause of hip pain is Arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage within a joint to become stiff and lose elasticity, resulting in its wear over time. In the case of the hip, the cartilage’s ability to absorb regular day-to-day force from the upper leg is greatly reduced. As the cartilage becomes more damaged the surrounding tendons and ligaments stretch and cause pain. In serious cases the cartilage may fully wear down and the bone may be in contact at the joint.

Another common form is Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is an autoimmune condition that occurs when the body’s natural protective immune system falters and begins to attack the body’s own tissue. The joints become inflamed as a result. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects people in different ways. Symptoms can occur quickly or present themselves slowly over a number of years. Some people have the condition for a relatively short period before successfully entering remission. For others, a longer treatment programme is necessary.

There are a also number of other causes of hip pain in both children and adults including:

  1. Bursitis: inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joints
  2. Tendinitis: inflammation of the tendons that attach muscles to bones
  3. Injury: such as a hip fracture, muscle strain or ligament sprain
  4. Sciatica: compression of the sciatic nerve in the lower back
  5. Degenerative disc disease: deterioration of the discs that cushion the vertebrae in the spinal column
  6. Referred pain: pain that originates in another part of the body and is felt in the hip
  7. Infections: such as septic arthritis
  8. Certain medical conditions: such as hip dysplasia or hip labral tear.

Hip pain refers to discomfort or pain felt in or around the hip joint, which is located in the upper thigh bone. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, or muscle strain.

How effective is osteopathy for hip pain?

Yes, your Osteopath will use non-invasive techniques to try and restore correct alignment in your hips using stretching and manipulation of the joint and surrounding muscles.

Can Osteoarthritis Be Cured?

An initial consultation will be 45 minutes in total, which typically will include 15 minutes for consultation followed by 30 minutes for treatment and advice. The price for a first appointment is currently £60. A single session of follow up treatment will also be £60 however it is also possible to book a package of 6 sessions together which works out as £50 per session.
