What Are The Risk of A Poor Workstation Setup?

A poor ergonomic setup can encourage slouching, rounded shoulders, and a forward-leaning position. Over time, this can lead to muscular imbalances, postural problems, and chronic pain throughout the body, affecting not only the neck and back but also the hips, knees, and feet. Some of the most important implication of a poor workstation setup can include:

  • Neck and Shoulder Pain: A poorly positioned monitor or an improper chair height can force you to tilt your head or hunch your shoulders forward, leading to a condition known as “forward head posture” or “tech neck.” This posture strains the muscles and ligaments in the neck and shoulders, potentially causing pain, stiffness, and even headaches.
  • Back Pain: Support for the lower back is incredibly important when sitting for a long period of time and can otherwise result in poor spinal alignment, leading to painful conditions such as Sciatica
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries: An improper keyboard and mouse setup or lack of wrist support can lead to awkward wrist positions, causing repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis.
  • Hips and legs: It is important to have a chair with proper support and correct seat height. Failing to do so can lead to poor hip and leg alignment, which can contribute to hip tightness, muscle imbalances, and increased pressure on the thighs and buttocks. Prolonged sitting in this position may also restrict blood flow to the legs, potentially leading to swelling or even deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in severe cases.
  • Eyes and vision: Improper monitor positioning, excessive glare, or inadequate lighting can strain the eyes and lead to eye fatigue, dryness, blurred vision, and headaches.

What is a Desk Assessment?

Our Desk Assessment service is designed to promote workplace well-being and mitigate the adverse effects of prolonged desk-based work. You will receive a 30 minute consultation with our Practitioner to fully examine your workstation setup and daily routine. It is a great way to identify whether your desk setup is contributing towards any pain or discomfort you may be feeling, or whether it is likely to cause you any problems in the future.

We begin by assessing your desk setup, chair, monitor placement, keyboard, and mouse positioning to ensure they are ergonomically optimized for your individual needs. We also provide guidance on proper desk accessories such as footrests and lumbar support cushions. Additionally, we conduct a thorough evaluation of your posture, identifying any areas of tension, discomfort, or potential musculoskeletal issues. Following the assessment, we offer personalized recommendations and exercises to help you maintain a healthy and pain-free workspace, ultimately enhancing your overall productivity and well-being.

How is this provided?

Our Desk Assessment service can either be provided in person or virtually over a video conference call. Typically the service will be completed virtually and at a time convenient to you. In order to prepare for your consultation, the only thing you will need is something stable (ideally a tripod or phone holder) for your camera so that can fully see and assess your desk setup. If we are providing this service in person we will need to discuss the price of the service specifically with you and/or your employer.
